Our Bats Have "Gate" Appeal
,

Little Brown Bats In May we asked you, our members, to help raise the funds to build a better Bat Gate at Hibernia Mine in northwestern New Jersey. This important site for wintering bats has attracted vandals who persist in cutting through the steel gate at the entrance, putting the entire population of 30,000 bats at risk.

Disturbing bats during hibernation can be fatal to these beneficial creatures. Once the bats begin to hibernate, their metabolisms slow down and their stored fat nourishes them through the winter.  If the bats are disturbed, their metabolisms increase and their winter nourishment is used up quickly. With no food available during the winter months, they can easily starve to death before spring comes.

We are happy to announce that we have reached our goal for the Bat Gate! Thanks to the generosity of more than 170 members, we can install a tamper-proof gate at Hibernia Mine. The new gate will help protect six species of bats, including the state's second largest population of endangered Indiana bats. Thank you, you helped us build a better Bate Gate!
