Jersey City Peregrine Cam

Endangered peregrine falcons have called 101 Hudson Street in Jersey City, New Jersey home since 2000. A webcam installed on the rooftop captures their every move, allowing us the rare opportunity to see peregrines court, incubate, and raise their young.

UPDATE
June 13,
2008

At six weeks, the chicks’ flight feathers are nearly full grown. It will take a little more time before the feathers are able to carry the birds' weight and force of flight. Both chicks are capable of short flights and their skills will develop quickly. The adult peregrines stick close to the newly fledged chicks. The chicks are still very dependent on their parents for food but over the next month, they will begin learning how to hunt.

Yesterday, we received reports from people living and working around 101 Hudson Street that both chicks had fledged. By early afternoon, one of the chicks had been discovered at a nearby parking garage by a Jersey City Animal Control Officer. The bird was on the ground and a bit stunned, probably from a rough flight or rough landing. The bird was transported to The Raptor Trust for a health check. If all is well with the new fledgling, then the bird will be returned to the Jersey City rooftop on Monday.

As the school year comes to close, we here at Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey would like to thank all the teachers and students who tuned into the webcam and learned a little more about the wildlife that shares our communities with us. Keep looking up and looking out and you will be amazed at what you can find right here in New Jersey. Happy Summer!
