Join Our Dedicated Crew of Volunteers
Conserve Wildlife Foundation’s many projects would not be nearly as successful without the help from dedicated volunteers throughout the state. From assisting with road closures to help amphibians safely crossroads, helping to fence beach-nesting bird habitat, listening for frog and toad calls, monitoring American kestrel nest boxes, counting bats, and installing and repairing osprey nesting platforms, you can support us and help to conserve and monitor New Jersey’s rare wildlife.
Most of our volunteer opportunities offer chances to get hands-on experience with wildlife management techniques in the habitat where these rare species exist. You will discover that New Jersey is an amazing state that is rich in biodiversity. You may also meet other like-minded individuals who are passionate about wildlife conservation and love to get outdoors!

Delaware Bay Shorebird Stewards
May is wonderful time of year at the Delaware Bay. Horseshoe crabs are spawning and shorebirds are stopping over on their migration to feed on the HSC eggs. One of these shorebirds the red-knot, is a federally threatened species. Beaches along the Delaware Bay in New Jersey are extremely important stops in their migration. Many of these beaches have been restricted from May 7th to June 7th to allow the shorebirds to feed undisturbed. They need to gain enough weight to be able to fly non-stop to their breeding grounds in the artic.
Shorebird stewards support beach restrictions by being present at restricted access beaches during shorebird season to ensure that resting and foraging shorebirds are not disturbed. This job includes educating beach visitors as to why the beaches are closed and the importance of the beaches to horseshoe crabs and migrating shorebirds.
When: May 10th – May 26th
Where: Delaware Bay beaches from Reed’s beach south to a section of beach in the Villas, in Cape May County. Fortescue and Thompson’s beaches in Cumberland County.
Hours: three shifts available; 6am-10am, 10am -2pm & 2pm-6pm
