Getting out into nature has always engaged our five senses in a way that nothing else does, and at a time like this we value it more than ever.
The colorful pastels and fragrant scents of budding flowers. The cacophonous calls of spring peepers. The visual confirmation of spring arriving in your awestruck glimpse of an osprey soaring overhead. The soothing caress of your hand’s first dip into the soil of your garden, and soon after, the first bites of your earliest spring greens.
As each of our senses awakens, we are reminded that life goes on all around us, even as our day-to-day reality seems to change with stunning regularity.
Fortunately for us, New Jersey offers more diverse opportunities to get outdoors within a reasonable drive than anywhere else in the country.
In my book, Wild New Jersey: Nature Adventures in the Garden State, I explored many of these special places, their unique wildlife, and outdoor activities.
During these stressful times of social distancing and isolation, taking solace in the natural world is more valuable than ever. I want to share some of my favorite outdoor oases with you. My hope is that by visiting on your own, with your family, or in some cases with your beloved dog, that you too will find some of the peace and happiness I feel when spending time in the wildest parts of our state.
I’ll introduce one location each week – some you may know well, and others may be more of a hidden gem. First up, join me to explore springtime at Sandy Hook.
Important note: Be sure to practice social distancing for the foreseeable future. And while nature hikes or walks are still encouraged, follow any state or federal guidelines if that should change.
