One Strong and Feisty Chick at the Duke Farms Eagle Nest
The Duke Farms eagle pair are beloved by cam viewers who watched them lay three eggs in January and incubate during two weeks of freezing cold weather. Unfortunately, one of the eggs prematurely cracked on February 20th and wasn’t viable.

Cam viewers were heart broken but were hopeful for the two remaining eggs. On February 22nd, the first chick hatched to the relief and delight of cam viewers.

The chick is now five days old and thriving. The third egg is still in the nest and being incubated, but it is looking like this egg will not hatch. If this is the third egg laid (which we don’t know) today would be 40 days since it was laid.
We are so happy to have one healthy chick in this nest. The nest is well stocked with merganser, eel and fish. One plus of being the only chick is that it will get all of the adults attention and will not have to compete with siblings for food.
Nest Monitor, Diane Cook writes informative eagle cam updates as the season progresses which can be found on the Conserve Wildlife Foundation, Duke Farms eagle cam page.
Thank you to Duke Farms for hosting the eagle cam.

What about egg number 3. It appears to be cracked, too.
