Lessons Learned from a Summer of Banding American Oystercatchers

Those who have followed CWF’s work throughout the years know how important bird banding can be for wildlife biologists and conservationists. The practice, which involves placing metal and/or color bands on a bird’s legs, can provide useful information about that bird’s life history, site fidelity, and movement. Typically, banded shorebirds are equipped with a unique alphanumeric code or color combination (kind of like a name tag), which enables scientists to track an individual bird throughout its lifetime. For those monitoring New Jersey’s beach-nesting bird populations, bird banding greatly enhances the quality and accuracy of our productivity data, which allows us to make better-informed decisions regarding management.

Raising Awareness for Amphibians

Supporters who follow Conserve Wildlife Foundation across our social media platforms may have noticed that our channels became a bit less feather-y and more froggy in early May. This “takeover” was not just an acknowledgment of frogs and salamanders resuming their activities after winter brumation; however, you can expect the greatest diversity in the evening chorus this month with all native species besides mid-Atlantic coast leopard and wood frogs regularly calling. Rather, our shift in theme was in support of two international campaigns, Salamander Saturday and Amphibian Week, which aim to raise awareness for the most globally threatened class of vertebrates. 

The Foundation for the Conservation of Salamanders (FCSal) began the Salamander Saturday initiative in 2015 and has annually encouraged other organizations around the world to help “Keep the World Slimy” through outreach events. This year, several zoos, nature centers, parks, museums, and even a brewery joined in the festivities by offering interactive exhibits, walks, crafts, and more for their patrons on May 4th. In addition to live activities, FCSal urges the use of #SalamanderSaturday on Facebook and Instagram to disseminate information far and wide. 

While CWF’s work focuses on large-bodied mole salamanders, New Jerseyans are lucky enough to share the landscape with 16 species ranging from the tiny four-toed salamander (~2”) to the Eastern tiger salamander (~8”).  Of these, nine are currently being monitored as endangered, threatened, species of concern, or species of interest, largely due to habitat loss and fragmentation. While you may not see them often, salamanders do a lot for our planet. They play an important role in the food chain as both predator and prey, contribute to carbon sequestration, aerate the soil, and more. Salamanders are also fascinating creatures. Though they do not coexist peacefully within flames as myths and legends suggest, they do share something in common with embers in that they “glow”. Scientists have not cracked the code on why but have found that many species bio fluoresce under different wavelengths of light. The bright colors and patterns frequently featured on their skin can be indicative of toxins and they are experts in regeneration, which could hold clues for medical advancement. Amphibian Week was started by the Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) in 2020 and spans the first full week of May each year (the 5th– 11th in 2024). Activities occur in virtual and live capacities but are inspired by a unique theme that is selected in advance by PARC. In recognition of the upcoming summer Olympics in Paris, this year’s concept was Extreme Athletes: Amphibian Edition. Daily prompts included an opening ceremony, a warm-up day, aquatic, gymnastic, and track & field “events”, awards, and a closing ceremony. 

CWF’s Amphibi-Olympics opened with the recitation of our amphibian anthem by a Fowler’s Toad (we knew that scream would capture your attention) and the torch lighting by a legendary fire salamander.

CWF interns, Connor and Nikki, had fun getting creative with the theme and sharing all the knowledge and admiration that they have for frogs and salamanders with our followers on Facebook and Instagram during our Amphibi-Olympics. After an evaluation of the adaptations our native amphibians have evolved to excel at life in water, on land, and in the trees, the bullfrog, Pine Barrens tree frog, and spring peeper took home the gold in the aforementioned “sports”. To add to the fun (and to accurately represent our life in the field where dad-jokes are applauded), each day included an amphibious pun. See our social media (@wildlifenj) for all the knee-slappers but here’s a curated selection:

  • What do you call a hard-working female carpenter frog? Rosie the Ribbiter!
  • Why was the Eastern spadefoot late to work? His vehicle was toad!
  • What did the frog driving school instruct their students before getting behind the wheel? Cricket or Ticket!
The medalists from the Track & Field event take to the podium, with the spotted salamander taking bronze, the wood frog securing silver, and the spring peeper getting gold.  

While Salamander Saturday and Amphibian Week are fun and entertaining excuses to share the trivia and photos we amass throughout our field seasons, they are rooted in a not-so-fun and entertaining truth: over 40% of amphibians worldwide are currently on a path toward extinction. The amazing adaptations that enable them to inhabit both water and land make them more sensitive than other types of wildlife to changes in our environment… and our environment is changing. Decline is rapid and very concerning. But you can help! Become an Amphibian Ally by instituting small changes that can add up. Here are some ideas:  

  • Drive cautiously during the migration seasons.
  • Leave piles of leaf litter around in the fall.
  • Reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides you apply on your property- they can change the chemistry of breeding pools and reduce or eliminate reproductive potential.
  • Enjoy ATVs on trails – not by driving through pools and puddles!
  • Celebrate amphibians from a respectful distance unless you are actively assisting one in crossing a road or have to touch them for scientific research.
  • Report rare sightings and any sightings that occur on roadways to NJDEP’s Wildlife Tracker App: https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/ae6c1dbdacd94562a25785433f612750
  • Spend time hiking along streams/fishing? Decontaminate your shoes and gear to prevent the spread of diseases. Check out PARC’s guide on how:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax6dx72xOCQ
  • Talk about amphibians! Educate your friends, family members, students, neighbors, etc.
  • Interested in donating toward conservation efforts? Consider specifying amphibians as the beneficiaries as they are incredibly difficult to find grant funding for.

Three Bridges Eagle Cam: Season Highlights

For the second year in a row there haven’t been eagles nesting on the Three Bridges platform in view of eagle cam. The pair used the platform when it was first installed in 2021 and viewers got to watch the two chicks grow up and fledge. In 2022 & 2023 the pair have nested in a tree nest instead of the platform. While it’s disappointing that the pair didn’t use the platform, there was still plenty of avian action at the tower this season. There were several immature eagles visiting the platform this season, perhaps in the next few years one of these eagles will pair up and use the platform.

Animal, Vegetable, (Mineral doesn’t apply)…

This post is the second in our “super salamander (and frog)” series in which we’re exploring some of the unique adaptations exhibited by local amphibians that would seem more appropriate within the confines of a comic book than out and about in our Garden State landscape. Today’s focal species is the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum), our benevolent Poison Ivy. Full disclosure, this topic has nothing to do with plant, though salamanders themselves are not sensitive to the compounds that make humans itchy and have been known to use “leaves of three” as sources of shelter.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the DC Comic Universe, Poison Ivy is a villain who often opposes Batman (and occasionally Superman) during her crusade to protect plants and rid the world of environmental destruction. Though her goals may seem in line with ours here at CWF, her methodology differs dramatically and she is often defined as an eco-terrorist. A former botanist, Poison Ivy, AKA Pamela Isley, was poisoned by her professor. Though she survived the experience, the toxins drove her insane and transformed her into a human-plant hybrid. And that is where our connection lies…

If you’ve ever seen an egg mass deposited by a spotted salamander, you may have noticed that the casing often appears green. This is caused by an association with a very particular kind of green algae called Oophilia amblystomatis. The connection between salamanders and algae has been recognized for > 130 years. For most of that time, it was thought that the algae just occurred within the egg. This is a sensible mutualism- it is auspicious to both species involved. Spotted salamander eggs develop in vernal pools. These temporary wetlands may have relatively low concentrations of dissolved oxygen, so the introduction of algae, which can create oxygen through photosynthesis, into eggs can certainly benefit growing larvae. Under experimental conditions where salamander eggs containing algae were cut off from sunlight, growth and development was delayed and resulting individuals were smaller than those exposed to natural circumstances. On the other side, larvae produce CO2 and nitrogenous wastes, which can be used to the advantage of the algae. Studies have shown that Oophilia are most successful in water that has been exposed to spotted salamander eggs, even if they are not within the eggs themselves. Case closed, right?

Wrong. In 2011, a team of researchers at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, discovered that the relationship between these two organisms is, literally, skin deep… The algae don’t just infiltrate the salamander’s egg masses. They are also found within the salamander’s tissue cells. This type of connection is called an endosymbiosis- one cell living inside another cell. Coral reefs and their associated algae are the poster children for this phenomenon, but it is not uncommon among invertebrates. Vertebrates, however, tend to have much more active immune systems that are programed to recognize a cell growing within another cell as a health threat. We can be grateful for that, as dangerous pathogens (e.g., malaria), can spread this way. In the case of salamanders and algae, the above-mentioned team discovered that the amphibians were actively suppressing their immune systems to allow for the success of the algae, which indicates that they must continue to benefit from this association. The algae show signs of stress when encapsulated within the body of salamanders; sunlight becomes harder to access, so rather than creating energy through photosynthesis, they switch to the process of fermentation.

The endosymbiotic mutualism between spotted salamanders and green algae is totally unique among vertebrates. No other amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds, or bony fish are known to support a similar relationship. Research on the mechanisms and the meanings of this “partnership” are ongoing, but scientists are hopeful that the discovery could yield novel techniques for medical advancement.

While spotted salamanders are certainly not hybridizing with their algal associates, in a way, they walk the animal-plant boundary as they incorporate both types of cells within one compact package, therefore making them the amphibious analogs of DC’s Poison Ivy.

History of The Duke Farms Eagle Pair

The Duke Farms eagle cam is extremely popular and just this week viewers watched as two chicks hatched. These two chicks will be watched by a multitude of viewers over the next few months as they grow to become juveniles and leave the nest. As with anything in Nature, this pair has had it’s ups and downs. I wanted to summarize the history of this pair and nest. The male is a NJ banded bird (A/59) and has been in the pair from the beginning, he is 23 years old. Interestingly, there have been several females in the pair over the years. Thank you to Duke Farms for hosting the cam and their tech team that keeps it running smoothly when issues arise. The cam location has changed as well as the cam itself over the years and the quality of the picture has improved.

New Jersey Osprey Population Continues to Grow Despite Low Productivity

We’re proud to release results of the 2022 New Jersey Osprey Project Survey, which documented the greatest number of nesting ospreys in the history of the project. Overall, surveys by staff and loyal volunteers recorded a total of 733 occupied nests throughout the state. The majority of ospreys (83%) continue to nest along the Atlantic coast of New Jersey with the remainder nesting along the Delaware Bay and inland locations. Surveys recorded the outcome of 73% of the known population, which allows us to present these results with confidence.

Announcing New NFWF Funded Project to Study and Monitor American Oystercatchers along the Delaware Bay

CWF is excited to announce a new project funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Delaware Watershed Conservation Fund designed to develop and execute management strategies for American oystercatchers along the Delaware Bay. Breeding populations of American oystercatchers (State Species of Special Concern) have been well studied and monitored along New Jersey’s Atlantic Coast since 2003, but very little is known about the oystercatchers that nest on the sandy beaches along the Delaware Bay. In 2021, CWF conducted a near bay-wide window census survey to establish a baseline estimate of the Bayshore population. Thirteen oystercatcher pairs were documented across approximately 35 sites from Cape May Point to Sea Breeze, prompting a need for further research and management. This new project seeks to shed light on this understudied population and add to our scientific understanding of their management needs.

NJ Bald Eagle Nesting Season Underway

Bald Eagles are the earliest nesting birds in New Jersey. Two pairs of eagles laid eggs in December of 2022 and those nests have already hatched. Those pairs are the really early “birds”, so far 73 pairs of eagles are incubating (laid eggs). Nest Monitors are keeping an eye on over 300 known eagle territories in NJ, the bulk of which lay their eggs in February to mid-March. Eagles incubate for approximately 35 days before hatching occurs. The female does most of the incubating the male also takes over the incubation duties so the female can go out and hunt. One hundred and fifty nest monitors keep track of the eagle nests and report on incubation. It can be quite difficult to tell when an eagle is in the nest incubating. Sometimes all the nest monitor can see is just the top of the head pop up every now and then. One way to determine incubation at a nest is to witness a “nest exchange”, where the male and female switch incubation duty.

Over the next few months as the eagles incubate and hatch chicks, they are very sensitive to disturbance. Nest Monitors are trained and experienced and only view the nest from a location that doesn’t disturb the eagles. Monitors use high powered scopes and cameras to determine the status of the nest. While it’s always a great sight to see an eagle, please respect them and view from a distance. To see what goes on in an eagles nest close up check out the Duke Farms eagle cam. The pair is currently incubating two eggs and hatching of the first is expected around February 24th. You can also watch a pair of eagles at The Three Bridges eagle cam. They aren’t yet nesting and we’re not sure where they will nest this season, but they have been making frequent appearances at the nest tower.

A Visit to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research

When CWF biologists encounter an injured bird while doing field work, we usually turn to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for help.  A recent visit to the Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research facility located in Newark, Delaware provided great insight into the efforts that go into ensuring that injured and oiled birds have a second chance in the wild.  Their mission is to provide professional, compassionate rehabilitation to native injured and orphaned wild birds and contaminated wildlife, and to promote their stewardship through education and humane research.

The facility has two programs, the Wild Bird Clinic and Oiled Wildlife Response.  With more than 40 years of experience, the Wild Bird Clinic provides expert medical care, housing, and diets to injured, orphaned, and oiled native wild birds.

Inside the Oil Response Center you see large buckets to wash birds and other wildlife. Hoses hang from the ceiling to provide easy access and to avoid hazards.

Fact or Myth? The Ecological Importance of Bats

It’s that time of year again, the days are getting shorter, temperatures are dropping, and creatures of the night are lurking behind shadowy corners. As Halloween approaches one animal comes to the forefront of everyone’s mind – bats.

Bats have been misunderstood by humans for many years and are still among the most persecuted animals on earth. In many parts of the world, bats are killed due to fear or harmful myths that make them seem scary or even dangerous. However, the fact is that bats are one of the most beneficial animals to humans.
